Tragedy in Nasarawa state university: Soldiers kill 4 students during peaceful protest

by Dare Lawal

A peaceful protest by students of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, turned fatal when soldiers who were brought in to quell the protest, shot and killed at least four students of the institution, wounding seven others.

As a result of the deaths, the university has been closed down indefinitely.

The university’s spokesman, Jamil Zakari confirmed the closure of the school, even though he said he could not “officially confirm” the deaths of the four students.

The peaceful protest action by the students was over water scarcity.

Some students who confirmed the incident claimed that they were on a peaceful protest over the shortage of water supply within the university when suddenly some military men stormed the university campus and shot sporadically.
“They came from nowhere and opened fire on us during which 15 students were shot at, out of which four later died,” said a student who participated in the protest.
