It’s Godswill Akpabio in the news again.
This time – thankfully – it isn’t about a new misspeak; but a response to an old one by another of the characters involved
A video recently surfaced, which showed the Akwa Ibom governor bragging during the Labaran Maku led Good Governance Tour in his state, that “I used my hand to strike out the name of the person who won before and I said it was important for me to give that region a senator in 2007 and I produced Senator Aloysius Etuk, that”s where he comes from. Senator, take a bow,”
The alleged beneficiary of the governor’s ‘benevolence’, Senator Alloysius Etok, has however said that he is disappointed with the governor over the statement.
I is suprising that Etok is only saying that now, considering taht he was present in the hall when the governor made the statement and he indeed stood up to take a bow after the governor called on him to do so.
Etok said that Akpabio played no special role in the polls to make him win the senatorial election. He credited his victory to the party’s authentic zoning formula in the district.
Etok, however expressed relief that the governor “cleared himself after an aide passed him a note” allegedly on the implications of his vain boast.”
The senator who represents Ikot Ekpene senatorial district in the senate explained that he came third in the PDP primaries but later emerged as candidate when the party later decided to zone the ticket to his part of the senatorial district and he was the one with the highest votes from the area.
When asked if the governor’s controversial comment was an unintended gaffe by the state chief executive, Etok said the conclusion was for members of the public to make given the explanations he has offered to our reporter. He affirmed however that he was disappointed at the comment.
Asked if he has any problems with the governor, Senator Etok said Akpabio was just one member of the district that he represents at the senate and that he has no issues with his constituents.
