Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the death of a student on Thursday in the melee which took place at the University of Uyo when students protested against increased bus fares in the university.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Commissioner of Police in the State, Umar Gwadabe, confirmed the death of the student and said 45 others were arrested by the police.
He however insisted that the police did no wrong in their conduct during the protest.
“The police is duty bound to stop the protest from escalating from campus into town as the students tried to advance into the city. “In this circumstance, the police did not do anything wrong,” he said.
Meanwhile an official statement from the authorities Of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) has confirmed the shutting down of the university indefinitely.
The protest recorded student casualties as police tried to ward off the furious students. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Comfort Ekpo, who the students insisted should address them, was said to have travelled to Abuja, on official engagement when the incident occurred.
