The umbrella splits: Atiku, 7 governors form new PDP faction

by Stanley Azuakola

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP’s) special convention ended today on a sour note as a faction of the party emerged led by a former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, and seven of the party’s 23 governors.

The new faction called a press conference after storming out of the PDP’s special convention in which they announced Bala Kaoje as the new national chairman. The former PDP national secretary, Olagunsoye Oyinlola was announced as the new secretary.

The press briefing was attended by the governors of Kano (Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso), Sokoto (Aliyu Wamakko), Rivers (Rotimi Amaechi), Jigawa (Saminu Turaki), Kwara (Abdulfatah Ahmed), Adamawa (Murtala Nyako), and Niger (Babangida Aliyu), as well as Atiku Abubakar.

The party leaders said they took the decision to salvage the PDP from those who have hijacked it.
