The Chairman of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Dr Lawan Abubakar has said that contrary to media reports, the union only postponed its National Executive Committee meeting for one week so as to mourn its late president, Festus Iyayi.
Iyayi lost his life in an auto crash involving the convoy of the Kogi governor, Idris Wada.
According to Abubakar, media reports which claim that the suspension of NEC was for an indefinite period of time are false and speculative.
Considering that the one week of mourning announced by ASUU has now expired, it is expected that the NEC meeting would be reconvened. However, Abubakar said that the members of the union are awaiting further directives from the national leadership on the new date for the NEC meeting.
Abubakar further said that the union has not accepted the latest N1.3 trillion offered by the Federal Government. The union, according to him is “agitating for is the full implementation of the 2009 agreement and nothing less.”
