More details have emerged from the Friday night secret meeting of the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, National Executive Council, which held in Kano till Saturday morning.
Firstly, it was gathered that the NEC meeting was well attended with over 50 universities in attendance.
The meeting was held at Mambayya House. The ASUU officers came in two coaster buses, secured by the union’s Kano chapter.
It is believed that in adherence to the promise allegedly made to President Goodluck Jonathan by the union to inform him first of its resolve before going public, the lecturers kept mum and refused to entertain questions from reporters.
However reports have it that the lectures were divided 40 – 60 percent after the meeting, with the resolution from the universities in Northern states favouring the end to the strike while their peers from the South strongly support the continuation of the strike.
But unconfirmed reports say that they have reached a middle ground that would be pleasant to Nigerians.
