The changes in the federal cabinet of President Goodluck Jonathan are not over yet. There are indications that Jonathan intends to send a fresh list of ministerial nominees to the Senate for consideration and approval.
As Aso Rock continues to draw out its strategy to compensate followers, improve support in some states and prepare for the next elections, the president is likely to include names like former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, his counterpart in Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, Senator Gbemi Saraki from Kwara State, and outgoing Anambra governor, Peter Obi, in his cabinet.
According to reports, he presidency directed the senate to defer the screening of Hajia Jamila Salik from Kano State last month to pave the way for Kwakwanso.
The Presidency was also said to be considering the nomination of Bafarawa to check the growing popularity of the All Progressives Congress in the state and the rumoured ambition of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, to contest the governorship election in 2015.
Obi, has already been mentioned by both President Jonathan and finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as someone who they’ll like to see in the federal cabinet at the expiration of his tenure next Monday.
Editor’s note: A previous version of this post had included ‘Kwankwaso’ in the headline. That was a mistake which we’ve now corrected and replaced with Shekarau. Apologies.
