On Thursday, the APC announced that it will go about selecting its candidate for next year’s election in a different format from usual. Rather than gathering a few thousand delegates to Abuja and marching them to the Eagle Square to vote, it said it will adopt a staggered presidential primary system in which different states will vote on different days.
At the meeting in which the new model was approved, two men who are expected to slug it out for the ticket were present. One was a former military head of state, widely regarded as a populist and non-conformist, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari; the other was a former civilian vice president, widely regarded as a strategist and moneybag, Atiku Abubakar.
The primary season has not yet kicked off, and so for now, the both of them are still all about the smiles and handshakes. Soon, the games will begin.
