President Goodluck Jonathan has already been endorsed by all organs of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to be the party’s presidential flagbearer next year. The only problem is that due to that endorsement, PDP governors serving out their second terms now want same privilege extended to them when selecting who will replace them next year. The governors who are mostly angling for senate seats are also asking the party to automatically give them the ticket.
The leadership of the party in Abuja is not comfortable with the desire of the governors. They want some of the party’s ranking senators to return next year.
On Wednesday night, the governors and the national leadership of the party held a meeting to discuss how best to resolve this issue but they failed to reach an agreement that will satisfy all the parties involved.
According to reports, it was the governors who called for the meeting but it held at the residence of the PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu. Muazu and other members of the PDP executive who attended the meeting reportedly worried that almost all the PDP second term governors want to contest senatorial elections in their states.
Another meeting between the two groups is expected to hold before the end of the week.
