In previous elections, the opposion almost acted as dumping ground for the ruling party, waiting patiently until the PDP does its own primary elections so that the losing candidates can defect and pick their tickets.
There were not as many incidents like that in this current primary season. However, in some states the tradition continued.
In Kebbi, Senator Atiku Bagudu, the shady lawmaker who had close ties with brutal dictator Sani Abacha dumped the PDP and 24 hours later he became the candidate of the APC for governor.
In Benue, it also played out in a senate race. Barnabas Gemade, a current senator and former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, was bullied by Gov. Gabriel Suswam who got the PDP ticket for Benue North East, the seat currently being occupied by Gemade. As a result of this, the senator decamped from the PDP, and has now easily picked up the APC senatorial ticket a short 24 hours later.
Gemade will now slug it out against Gov. Suswam in next year’s general elections.
