As the controversy continues to mount over the prosecution of Nigeria’s senate president, Bukola Saraki, by the Code of Conduct Bureau on allegations of false declaration of assets, Saraki has removed the name of his party – the ‘APC’ – from his official Twitter page.
Previously, the senate president’s Twitter bio read “Member of the APC” at the end. That has however been edited. The full bio now reads: “Senate President and Chairman of the 8th National Assembly. Committed to Transparency and Accountability.”
Saraki however insists that he is still a member of the ruling APC. In response to a Twitter user who said that he seems to be “going back to his vomit @PDPNigeria,” Saraki said, “I remain a card carrying member of my dear party. But I’m also honoured to serve as Senate President of all Senators.”
His special adviser, Yusuf Olaniyonu, has also defended the editing of Saraki’s bio.
“It is not a new development. The party logo was there during the elections and we took it off after the elections about a month ago,” Olaniyonu said, even though his claim of the change being at least a month old is untrue as it happened just about a week ago
