Ekiti governor, Ayodele Fayose, is not a big fan of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. During his first stint as governor of Ekiti, Obasanjo was president, and their relationship which started on a good footing soon deteriorated to the point where Obasanjo allegedly orchestrated the governor’s impeachment.
Since Fayose’s return in 2014, he has not missed an opportunity to criticise and bait the former president. He used two different occasions in the last two days to come after Obasanjo from two different angles.
In a press conference in Lagos on Sunday, Fayose slammed Obasanjo and pointedly said that he is more politically relevant than the former president.
As the number one citizen of Ekiti State, Fayose said he wields more power than Obasanjo who “goes to Abuja to beg President Muhammadu Buhari for political favours.”
He said, “I was governor without a godfather. I was governor for three years but Obasanjo took me out. Obasanjo is now an expired man today and I am still more than relevant. He is expired. He goes to Aso Rock every week to go and beg.
“How many times did Buhari visit him (Obasanjo) when he was President? Buhari did not go to Aso Rock throughout. He didn’t even go for Council of State meetings. What is Obasanjo looking for in the Villa? A man of 80! What is he looking for?
“He keeps writing to Presidents to nominate ministers for them. That was Goodluck Jonathan’s offence. Enough is enough.”
On Monday, Buhari threw a challenge to Pres. Muhammadu Buhari and it had something to do with Obasanjo again. Fayose said that if Buhari was really serious about the corruption war, he ought to go back and probe the administrations of Obasanjo and other past presidents to see how they spent their security votes. He was basically echoing the incredulous suggestion of his party, the PDP.
Fayose said: “I support the fight against corruption but it has to be total. Buhari must be bold enough to probe how ex-presidents Obasanjo, Babangida and others spent their security votes,” Fayose said. “All the Presidents that had come in Nigeria spent their security votes in the same pattern. So, Buhari must open the book and come out with facts.”
