The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Ikunyi Awaji-Ibani, on Friday resigned his position as Speaker.
Just before 7pm, shortly after the assembly passed the State’s N307bn budget for 2016, the Speaker announced that he was “stepping aside for reasons best known to me.”
“In life, there is time for everything. I was called to serve and I think I have served you well. At this juncture, I want to announce that I am stepping aside,” Speaker Ibani said.
The political situation in Rivers is fluid at the moment. Gov. Wike has lost at both the election tribunal and Appeal Court and if he also fails at the Supreme Court, the Speaker ought to serve as acting governor during the period before another election is held and a new governor sworn in. However the election of the speaker was also nullified by the tribunal and he is appealing it.
