The new official residence of the vice president is expected to gulp over N7billion, out of which more than N6billion has been paid to Julius Berger so far and more allocation provided in the proposed 2016 budget for it. It is a project from the previous administration but in the current budget, N3.14bn is set aside for “design and construction of the Vice President’s residence, ADC residence, Security quarters, site clearing and earthworks, road works, street lighting, outstanding liability, drainages.”
Now, Nigeria’s current Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has described the construction of the new residence as a ‘waste of public funds’.
“There is no need for a new Vice President’s house; it is a kind of waste; we are now in a situation where we cannot abandon it; it has to be completed and used for a different thing,” he said while speaking at the pastors and leaders retreat of the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos.
Osinbajo said the current VP residence, Aguda House, is suitable for living and up to standard.
He however said the construction of the building has to be completed, but noted that it would be used for something else, other than a proposed residence of the Vice President.
Osinbajo also alleged that the administration of former presidents- Goodluck Jonathan and late Umaru Musa Yar Adua did not construct a single road in the country.
He further stated that the entire Nigerian system is suffering from lack of integrity while stressing that corruption is not limited to a few individuals.
He said: “Unless we tackle graft, we may not be able to achieve something. The federal government in the past 10 years could not build a single new road, not repairing existing ones alone.
“Now we have a president who will not steal money and who will not allow anybody to steal money”, Osinbajo added.
Osinbajo further made mention of the controversial State House Medical Centre, which he said is for the use of all Nigerians.
