EFCC loses seven-year old court case in Taraba

A Jalingo High Court last week discharged and acquitted Alhaji Illiyasu Goje, a former local council boss in Taraba, over an allegation of criminal breach of trust brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2009.

Trial judge, JUstice Nuhu Adi, ruled in his hour long judgement that the EFCC failed to prove its case against the former Gassol local council boss beyond reasonable doubt.

Adi said that the EFCC witnesses failed to prove that the defendant breached the trust reposed on him by the public while serving as the council chairman.

The judge said that the “accused person is not in any way linked with the exhibits” presented before the court, as the complainant failed to prove his case that the accused actually deserved to be punished.
