The battle for supremacy in Kano between Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje and his predecessor, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, took a new turn on Thursday as the police banned a mass wedding ceremony planned by a group loyal to the former governor and an empowerment program event planned by the state government.
The two events were scheduled to take place on the same day – August 20th, but the police said it had intelligence which revealed that some “disgruntled elements” planned to cause havoc on the day.
“The police has banned the two ceremonies indefinitely as security Intelligence available at our disposal revealed that some disgruntled elements are preparing to use the occasions to cause havoc in the state,” said the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Magaji Majiya, in a statement.
The police commissioner would invite the organisers of the two events for a meeting with a view to resolving the issues, the spokesman said.
“Our prime responsibility is to ensure peace, tranquility, protection of lives and property as well as maintenance of law and order,’’ the statement said.
