The National Union of Pensioners (NUP), FAAN branch, has expressed its displeasure with the proposed concession of the major airports in the country, saying that the move being championed by minister of state for aviation, Hadi Sirika was “without any recourse to some vital issues which are of concern to this nation.”
In a statement jointly signed by the chairman and secretary of the FAAN branch, Rasaq Ope and Emeka Njoku respectively, the union faulted the minister’s justifications for wanting to concession the airports and asked that caution be exercised in the process, especially with regards to national security.
“In our recent position, we mentioned about security and we also said airports are not primarily built to make profits but to link this nation with other countries in the world therefore, it should be guided with all necessary machinery,” the statement said.
“We posit that, at present the Chinese are still constructing and expanding international airports, which the Minister wants to concession them to foreigners. This is a clear case of colonization,” it stated.
It added that the officials of the airport authority have, in the past, managed the facility profitably while challenging the minister to make its blueprint for the concessioning of the airports public.
“We want to posit that these four airports were being managed by Nigerians over the years and it was graded category A and not managed by foreigners, so why should we concession them now? If he feels the present management of FAAN is not competent, he should bring good hands to manage the airports. If he lacks appointment clue, we can help him select competent hands,” the statement read.
