Saraki’s media aide, others, needle Buhari over Aisha Buhari’s frustration

On Friday morning, everyone was talking about Aisha Buhari’s unprecedented reprimand of her husband, Pres. Muhammadu Buhari.

In an interview with the BBC, the wife of the Nigerian president sensationally said that even though her husband has not told her if he plans to run for reelection in 2019, she “will not go out and campaign again and ask any woman to vote like I did before. I will never do it again” if things continue like this.

Her frustration with the president concerns the way he has staffed his administration. He “does not know 45 out of 50, for example, of the people he appointed and I don’t know them either, despite being his wife of 27 years,” she said.

According to her, there were a few people behind appointments in the government and those ones were not offering it to those who had supported and campaigned for the president last year.

“Some people are sitting down in their homes folding their arms only for them to be called to come and head an agency or a ministerial position,” she said.

Her statement has gained much traction with the opposition, especially members of the Peoples Democratic Party. For instance, Lere Olayinka, the media aide to Gov. Ayo Fayose of Ekiti, shared the story several times on social media and said in his characteristic grotesque humour that he hopes “Aisha Buhari won’t suffer the same fate like Safinat Buhari…”

Safinat was President Buhari’s late first wife who he divorced in the 1980s upon his release from prison when he found out that she accepted financial assistance from former head of state, Ibrahim Babangida.

Jokes were also made about Aisha’s outcry.

Some in the president’s own party but who haven’t been on friendly terms with him also weighed in. Bamikole Omishore, the new media aide to the senate president Bukola Saraki said Aisha’s statement has shown that there truly is a “government within the government” just as his boss had said some months ago.

He said Pres. Buhari has sidelined those who worked for his victory in 2015, bringing in those who may have their own agenda.
