The voters in Ekiti and Osun states will head to the polls to elect new governors on July 14, 2018 and September 22, 2018 respectively as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Thursday, released the election time table for the two states.
Releasing the details, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Solomon Soyebi, said the schedule was released in accordance with Section 178 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 25 (8) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) which stipulates that election into the office of governor should be held not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of the term of office of the last holder.
But don’t start campaigning yet: According to Soyebi, the release of the time table is not permission for the political parties to start campaigns in the two states. He warned that campaigns can only start when the Commission issues a notice of election which will not be earlier than 90 days before the elections.
“The commission is by virtue of Section 30(1) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) expected to issue a notice for the election not later than 90 days before the date of the election.”
