Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state has sacked the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Boniface Ortese, just five days after the closure of the camp for flood victims in the state.
Ortese had been in charge of the response services as the state experienced the terrible floods which displaced thousands. SEMA supervised the housing and management of the displaced persons at the Makurdi Ultra Modern International Market and other camps with support from the Federal government and other well-meaning bodies and individuals. The camp was closed on Monday, 9th October, 2017.
Why he was sacked: According to the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Terver Akase Ortese was sacked “over insubordination”. Ortese’s dismissal can be linked to his strained relationship with the governor over the manner the affairs of the camps were handled. Ortese also reportedly had a running battle with the deputy governor, Benson Abounu, who is the Chairman of the Flood Management Committee.
Titus Zam, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, has been designated to take charge of the agency.
