At the commencement of hearing of the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee to investigate allegations of lack of facilities at the State House Clinic, the Permanent Secretary, State House, Jalal Arabi attributed the lack of facilities at the State House clinic to inadequate funding over the years.
The committee was set up following comments by Zahra Buhari and Aisha Buhari, daughter and Wife of President Muhammadu Buhari respectively, on the lack of basic facilities at the clinic.
Zahra drew the first blood when she utilised her Instagram account to call out Arabi to account for the humongous sums allocated to the clinic yearly. Subsequently, Aisha Buhari, at a stakeholders’ meeting on Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, narrated a personal experience where she was told that basic instruments like X-ray machine were not available in the clinic and advised to travel abroad when she needed medical attention.
While appearing before the Aliyu Magaji-led committee, Arabi said the lack of facilities at the clinic was a result of inadequate funding over the years which has seriously hampered its efficiency.
When queried as to the truth of the claims by Aisha Buhari, Arabi said “I can’t say that the First Lady is wrong.”
According to him, only N3.5 billion was released to the clinic between 2015 and 2017, contrary to the widely quoted figure of N10.9 billion. And the said sum has been put to good use by the management of the clinic.
