In a short statement on Tuesday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described the appointment of APC national leader, Bola TInubu as the chairman of the ruling party’s reconciliation efforts as a “shame”.
The PDP said that it is further proof of the federal government’s ineptitude and gross incompetence.
The PDP’s argument
According to the opposition party, the announcement should not have been made by the presidency but by the APC itself since Tinubu was designated to carry out a strictly partisan duty.
“Gen. Buhari, Nigeria President is ‘not aware’ that the Federal Government of Nigeria is different from APC and such announcement should be made by the Party, the APC and not the Federal Government of Nigeria. What a shame!” the PDP said.
Obiageli Ezekwesili agrees
In a separate comment, the convener of the #RedCardMovement, Obiageli Ezekwesili, also frowned at the presidency’s decision to announce Tinubu’s appointment. She said the presidency was wrong to issue the statement as its handles are an extension of the office of the president and not that of the APC candidate.
It is quite a PITY that the “ANYHOWNESS” has attained irredeemable proportion! This .@NGRPresident CANNOT BE USED to convey your Party survival plans. This handle is an EXTENSION of the #OfficeOfThePresident of Nigeria & NOT that of “#APCCandidate”. STOP IT! #PoorEthics https://t.co/guMIYuKq9K

But it is more complicated
If the presidency does not announce the appointment, who would do it? Everyone says the leadership of the ruling party, APC, should have done it.
However, the chairman of the party, John Odigie-Oyegun, is not exactly the chummiest with Tinubu. Recall that in September 2016, Tinubu asked Oyegun to resign after the contentious Ondo state governorship primary. “To rescue the party, Oyegun must go. He has shown that he and democratic fair play cannot exist in the same party at the same time,” Tinubu had said in a strongly worded statement.
