The acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo was in President Muhammadu Buhari’s hometown Daura yesterday to campaign on behalf of the APC candidate in the Katsina North Senatorial District bye-election. The seat became vacant following the death of Senator Mustapha Bukar who died 4th April.
Osinbajo gave three reasons why the electorate must vote his party.
“There are three reasons why we must make sure we vote for our candidate,” Osinbajo said. He listed them as follows:
– “First, we must have a majority in the Senate. Politics is about numbers. We must vote for him because we want to maintain the majority.
– “Second, we must honour the memory of the late Mustapha Bukar. We should not allow anyone to be there outside our own senator.
– “Thirdly, this zone is Buhari’s and a vote for Kaita is a vote for Buhari.”
In Summary: The three reasons provided by Osinbajo had nothing to do with proper representation of the electorate, had nothing to do with the capacity of the candidate or his track record. The acting president simply tried to play on sentiments. The first reason was in the interest of his party, the second exploited the death of the previous occupant and the third had everything to do with the ego of the President.
And what about the people of the district? How about their interest? No where to be found.
Interesting Fact: The two leading candidates in the race for the senate seat are siblings. APC’s Ahmad Babba Kaita is the younger brother to Kabir Babba Kaita of the PDP. Six parties however are involved in the by-election.
