Atiku picks Peter Obi as running mate

Atiku picks Peter Obi as running mate

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has picked the former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, as his running mate for the February 14, 2019 elections.

A source within the Atiku Campaign Organization confirmed the story to The ScoopNG.

“Fomer Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi is the Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party. He will be taking a joint ticket with H.E Atiku Abubakar. Press release soon,” he said.

Obi emerged as the preferred choice following consultations with stakeholders in the party. He met on Friday with the candidate, Atiku Abubakar, at the latter’s Asokoro residence in Abuja..

The ScoopNG earlier shared a shortlist of possible vice presidential candidates for Atiku, highlighting their pros and cons. Obi was one of those on the list, with the story highlighting that:

Obi is 57 years old and the former governor of Anambra State. He represents the South-East Zone and was long considered as a contender for Atiku’s VP slot even before the primary in Port Harcourt.

Obi still is regarded as one of the country’s best performing governors. He is a strong campaigner a businessman who complements Atiku’s pro-business background.

However, he has mostly been edged out of his Anambra state politics by his successor, Willie Obiano, who is a member of APGA.

Already, Atiku and Obi have been congratulated by some PDP stalwarts, including Bayelsa Senator Ben Murray-Bruce.

Having felt like it has been largely left behind in the country’s political leadership, the South East will feel energised by Obi’s emergence. The region is one of two zonal regions in Nigeria which have neither produced a president nor vice president since 1999. This fact has likely influenced the decision of the PDP to select a VP candidate from the region.

There is, however, the disadvantage of the number of registered voters in the South East being considerably less than those in the South West.
