Shehu Sani (Kaduna Central) defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the weekend when it eventually dawned on him that he did not get a reelection ticket in the party. The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) was initially on Sani’s side and cleared him as sole aspirant for the primaries, but a counter-offensive by Gov. Nasir El-rufai who wielded his close relationship with President Muhammdu Buhari to brutal effect, saw Sani dropped in the candidates’ list sent to INEC.
Resignation: “I had joined the APC and remained with it against all odds in the belief that it will constitute a veritable platform for the realization of those democratic ideals which I hold very dear, that honor and integrity will be the ultimate ethos of the party and, most importantly, that internal party democracy will always be the norm. However, only posterity can affirm the extent to which the APC has committed to and reflected these values,” Sani said in his resignation letter to his APC ward chairman.
What this means:
- El-rufai reigns supreme in Kaduna APC – impossible to cross him in the party and get away with it.
- Sani appears to be on his way out of the senate although there are reports that he may try to get the ticket of another party considering that there are a few days left during which parties are free to substitute candidates.
- We cannot confirm yet but there are reports that he has joined the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP)
- At this point, the main choice before the people of Kaduna Central is between APC candidate, Uba Sani (the governor’s former aide; no relative of Shehu Sani) and the PDP’s Lawal Usman Adamu, who previously defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
