Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), recently resurfaced in Israel more than a year after soldiers raided his home leading to fears that he had been killed. Some photos emerged last weekend showing Kanu praying at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, but the Biafran leader had not spoken until now.
Confirmed: Kanu announced on Sunday in a broadcast through the proscribed Radio Biafra that he is in Israel.
How did he escape from Nigeria?: Kanu claimed in the broadcast that he was evacuated by the military intelligence agency of IPOB. “IPOB Military intelligence evacuated me from my compound when the Army of the Zoo attacked me, I am in Israel,” he said.
“I owe my survival to the state of Israel,” Kanu further said. He said the Israeli spy agency, Mossad, helped him, but he did not elaborate.
The big question: How did Kanu make it to Israel when both his Nigerian and British passports were confiscated in Nigeria after his arrest?
Threat: “I will be back soon in the land of Biafra and I will bring hell with me.”
Why It Matters: Now that Nigeria knows where he is, it remains to be seen what action the Nigerian government would take. Would the government consider it an issue serious enough to engage with Israel over? There is a political element to it as well. Kanu reiterated his position that an election won’t happen in the South East of the country. Rhetoric like that can dampen voter turnout. Considering that the South East is a PDP stronghold, a low turnout in the region will favor President Buhari and the APC.
