About 50 police officers have broken down the gates leading into the headquarters of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), escorting the suspended Executive Secretary, Professor Usman Yusuf, into the premises, the Punch newspaper is reporting.
The policemen fired tear gas at a group of NHIS staff who had attempted to prevent Usman from entering into the premises.
Yusuf has been recently suspended by the governing council of the NHIS but has insisted that the council had no power to suspend him. He has since defied the suspension stating that only the President can authorize his suspension.
There is no response yet from the Federal Ministry of Health and the Presidency. However the fact that Yusuf was escorted by so many police officers despite the gravity of the allegations signifies that he has backing from influential persons, possibly even from the presidency.
