Nigeria has been named as the third most terrorized nation in the world, according to the annual Global Terrorism Index.
Backstory: In the report which was released on December 6th, Nigeria was placed in third place after Iraq and Afghanistan which are war-torn countries, and ahead of Syria, which has been engulfed in civil war over the past four years.
The report highlighted a drop in the number of deaths linked to terrorism. “Total deaths from terrorism in Nigeria fell to 1,532 in 2017, a drop of 16% from the previous year,” the report stated.
The 2018 Global Terrorism Index shows a continuing, albeit, slow decline in terrorism, with deaths from terrorism falling for the third consecutive year since peaking in 2014.
While the report shows that the global impact of terrorism is declining, it does show that terrorism is still widespread and getting worse in some regions.
Why It Matters: This is one more bad report that the Buhari administration would not want to hear about. By any measure 1500 terrorism-related deaths is a whole lot and is counter to the assurances given by the president on the campaign trail. The most recent killings saw hundreds of soldiers murdered by the terrorists in one of the worst ever attacks against the Nigerian military by terrorists. However, based on the Global Terrorism Index data, a 16% drop in the number of deaths shows movement in a positive direction.
