Akpabio says Akwa Ibom is 98% APC – it may not be, but it’s a state to watch

Senator Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom North-West) has said that he will ensure the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State in 2019.

Backstory: Akpabio stated this while addressing supporters at the inauguration of his senatorial election campaign in Essien Udim Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom.

He said, “Akwa Ibom today is 98% for APC.  It is not about me but God. Because you people are praying to God to save Akwa Ibom from the misrule of the PDP, we shall continue like this until victory is ours in 2019.”

Akpabio also said people of Akwa Ibom were appreciative of President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts in infrastructural development and political appointments offered to indigenes of the state.

He said the only way the state could reciprocate the gesture was to vote massively for the re-election of the president and all candidates of the party.

Akpabio, a former governor of the state, did not miss an opportunity to berate his successor, Udom Emmanuel, for non-performance.

He stated that after four years in power, the current governor of the state – who he personally hand-picked – cannot boast of any tangible project he initiated and completed.

Akpabio also took a jab at Emmanuel’s campaign slogan, “Only God”, saying that it was a hypocritical campaign slogan.

He urged his supporters not to bother with the governor’s antics but to respond through with their votes by voting against the PDP administration.

Bottom Line: Akwa Ibom is one of the states to watch in 2019. It gave one of the highest votes to the PDP in 2015 in an election that many observers characterised as fraudulent. Akpabio was believed to be the mastermind of that win, which is why his defection to the APC is seen as a coup for the national ruling party which is desperate to make inroads in the South South region.
