Atiku gets endorsement of the Joint Elders Council

Leaders and elders from various geopolitical zones across the country under the aegis of the Joint Elders Council, have endorsed Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as their preferred candidate for the February poll.

Backstory: This update comes after a “Summit of Nigerian Leaders and Elders” was held in Abuja, on Sunday.

The meeting was attended by various leaders from the geopolitical zones including Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Northern Elders Forum, Pan-Niger Delta forum, the Middle Belt Forum, as well as a faction of Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-political group.

The elders stated that the decision not to support President Muhammadu Buhari, who is seeking reelection, was based on the current President’s loss of control over his government. The leaders also accused President Buhari of stirring division within the country.

Prominent Nigerians at the meeting include Ayo Fasanmi (Afenifere), Dr. Pogu Bitrus (Middle Belt Forum), Ango Abdullahi (Northern Elders Forum), Edwin Clark (Pan Niger Delta Forum), John Nwodo (Ohanaeze Ndigbo) and Buba Galadima.

Bottom Line: While the extent of their influence within their respective regions might be debatable, this endorsement still has the potential of being a significant boost for the Atiku/Obi campaign across all geopolitical zones represented.
