With just three days to the national assembly elections and two weeks to the governorship and state assembly elections in Rivers state, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is frantic about ensuring that INEC enlists its candidates for various positions in the state. The party has now written to the electoral commission asking it to enlist APC candidates without delay.
The letter was signed by the APC counsel, Tuduru Ede.
What we know:
- The names of the APc candidates for National Assembly, governorship and state house of Assembly elections were removed by INEC from the list of candidates following a judgement of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt in a case filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers state.
- The APC appealed the ruling and got a stay of execution order from the Court of Appeal on 6th February, 2019. An appeal was filed against the Court of Appeal ruling, but the Supreme Court struck out the appeal.
- The APC said it is “dismayed that despite the ruling of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, the names of candidates of APC have not been published by the commission for the purpose of participating in 2019 general election” especially because INEC was not even a party to the suit.
- Quote: “In view of the foregoing, we call on the commission to without delay publish the names of candidates of APC in Rivers State for the 2019 general election as submitted by the APC.We have no doubt that the commission as a law-abiding institution will accede to this request without delay,“ the APC said in its letter.
