Akpabio Out: Former governor loses senate reelection bid in Akwa Ibom

After much controversy, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has finally announced the winner of the Akwa Ibom North West senate seat. In yet another upset, former governor of the state, Godswill Akpabio, running on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), lost his bid to return to the Senate. He’ll now be replaced with Chris Ekpenyong, the PDP candidate in the election, who is a former deputy governor of the state.

The announcement of Ekpenyong as winner was done in Uyo, rather than in the senatorial district, due to violence and threat to life of the officials.

Vote tally: Ekpenyong scored 118,215 votes to defeat Akpabio who got 83,158 votes.

Similarly, PDP’s candidate, Nsikak Ekong, has also won the House of Representatives election in Mr Akpabio’s Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency.

Mr Ekong defeated the incumbent, Emmanuel Akpan of the APC, scoring 29,849 votes compared to Akpan’s 22,056 votes.
