Removal of the Sultan has become a campaign issue in Sokoto’s governorship election

Removal of the Sultan has become a campaign issue in Sokoto’s governorship election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused its rivals, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State, of plotting to remove the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, if it wins the governorship election in the state on Saturday. The PDP has denied that accusation, but it has become a big subject of debate at the seat of the caliphate in the buildup to Saturday’s governorship poll.

Youths protest: On Monday, some youths demonstrated against the alleged plans of the APC to remove Sultan Abubakar. The march terminated at the Sultan’s palace where the leader of the march, Murtala Abdulrahman said, “We are at the palace to alert the Sultan to the evil plot by the APC to remove him if they win the governorship election. They alleged that the Sultan has not been supporting the APC. They are saying, ‘new government, new Sultan.’ We will not allow them to rubbish our traditional ruler. We shall put them to shame.”

APC denies: The APC which is the opposition party in the state has responded to the protest by the youths, accusing them of trying to tarnish the image of the party. The APC state chairman, Isa Acida, told journalists that the  chairman of the PDP in the state, Alhaji Ibrahim Milgoma, was inciting the youths and making statements capable of throwing the state into turmoil. He said Milgoma and the Zonal Vice-Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Muhammadu Dangwaggo, alongside other party leaders in the state, made the false allegations about a plan to remove the Sultan during a rally organised by PDP youths at Government House on Saturday.

PDP response: The PDP has said it is the APC that is responsible for the breach of peace in the state. According to the PDP secretary, kabiru Aliyu, “The PDP is not a violent party and we do not believe in violence. Governor Tambuwal has shown a good example of a peaceful leader and we are duly following him. Our message to our supporters was that they should resist vote rigging without violence.”

Bottom Line: Sokoto will be one of the big states to watch on Saturday. Gov. Aminu Tambuwal was a member of the APC until last year when he defected to the PDP to challenge for the presidency. He lost his party’s ticket however but now faces a battle to get reelected. His party lost the presidential election in the state although the result was closer than expected considering that Sokoto is one of the states Pres. Buhari has always won.
