Politics is local, and it is possible that there are local dynamics that may have led to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) victory in Unit 012 of Ajiya Ward of Adamawa North Local Government Area in today’s governorship and state assembly elections. That is the ward of former Vice president Atiku Abubakar, and although his party won it today, the reverse was the case two weeks ago when Atiku and the PDP were defeated in that polling unit.
The result: The APC polled 99 votes while the PDP got 161 votes in the governorship poll today. However in the presidential election last month, President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC defeated Atiku by 187 votes to 167 votes.
Bottom Line: The most likely explanation for the situation is the popularity of President Muhammadu Buhari in the North. The president is the most popular Northerner to ever run for office in the country.
