PDP asks INEC to declare its candidate winner in Kano following election mayhem

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the cancellation of the Kano re-run election holding today but the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the call, describing it as proof that the PDP is losing.

Backstory: INEC declared the Kano gubernatorial election inconclusive. The re-run elections are being held in 208 polling units across 29 local government areas, including Nasarawa local government area where there have been reports of widespread irregularities.

Kano PDP position: The Acting Chairman of the PDP, Rabiu Sulaiman-Bichi said: “Today this charade called re-run election was slated to hold in Kano and other states but unfortunately, what we have in Kano is nothing but a sham.”

National PDP position: In a statement by the PDP spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party called on INEC to declare its candidate, Abba Yusuf, winner as no valid election held in the state. Citing disruption by thugs in the state, the PDP called on INEC to “immediately do the needful by respecting the will of the people as freely expressed on March 9th, by declaring Abba Yusuf as winner of the election.”

APC position: Expectedly, the APC disagrees. Its Acting State Chairman, Rabiu Sulaiman-Bichi said: “It is unfortunate that the PDP chairman called for the cancellation of the election, while the election is still ongoing. This is a clear indication that they are afraid of losing the election, otherwise, why should he call for the cancellation of the election.”

What we know: The elections in Kano has been fraught with several reports of irregularities including voter intimidation and assault on journalists, observers and voters. Most of the reports from journalists have pointed fingers at the APC as the party behind most of the malpractice. Already, the Kano police has arrested a cabinet member in the Ganduje administration for leading thugs to disrupt the process.

The BBC has also reported an assault on its journalists in Kano, alleging an APC leader was behind the incident.
