The Speaker of Jigawa State House of Assembly, Isah Idris, has been impeached.
This development follows an emergency meeting on Thursday where 20 out of 30 lawmakers were present.
Members present are reported to have unanimously voted Idris Garba Kareka as the new speaker of the House.
Idris’ impeachment comes shortly after the mace was destroyed by the lawmakers who got into a fight over leadership of the House.
Backstory: The controversy began on Tuesday over an attempt by the former Speaker, Idris, to amend the house standing rule that stipulates that all former assembly speakers and deputy speakers cannot vie for the position of speaker again in subsequent assemblies.
The proposed amended rule also sought to disqualify principal officers who were suspended or impeached from re-contesting for the position of the speaker of the house.
However, members with the intention to return a former speaker, Kareka, who was impeached three years ago kicked against the decision.
The house was subsequently thrown into a rowdy session which led to the destruction of the mace.
