NLC demands Ngige’s probe over NSITF – but he has Aso Rock’s backing

The disagreement between the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) and the Minister of Labor, Chris Ngige, continues as NLC begins its protest against the minister in Abuja on Monday.

Backstory: The labor congress called on President Muhammadu Buhari to probe Ngige’s involvement in the affairs of the Nigeria Social Investment Trust Fund (NSITF).

According to NLC President Ayuba Wabba:

  • The protest is not against the inauguration of the NSITF board
  • Rather, it is against the manner in which Ngige handled the affairs of the labor sector in the past three years
  • Labor is also protesting against the recent attacks on protesters at the minister’s residence

Meanwhile, Ngige has inaugurated the NSTIF board. During the event on Monday, Ngige said:

  • The two-year delay in the inauguration is as a result of massive looting in the organization between 2012 and 2015
  • Out of N62.5 billion which was contributed, N48 billion was unaccounted for and N25 billion was withdrawn without vouchers

The inauguration of the new board comes a day after the Presidency openly supported Ngige in all actions taken concerning the NSITF.
