At the valedictory session of the 8th senate, the Akwa Ibom North West senator, Godswill Akpabio, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in August 2018, apologised to the opposition party for leaving just before the general elections.
“I apologize to my colleagues in the PDP for the manner I left. I know they miss me,” he said.
But do they? Akpabio’s move to the APC was heralded as the game-changer. The APC placed high hopes on him for the South-South, the same way the PDP hoped thaat Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso was going to help it pull off an upset in Kano. None of those scenarios worked out. Akpabio’s boast to “link the people of Akwa Ibom to the centre” failed as the PDP swept the polls in his home state and served him the ultimate defeat when he could not hold on to his own senate seat.
