Sokoto: PDP governor, APC speaker – how it happened

Sokoto: PDP governor, APC speaker – how it happened

One unique thing: In the new dispensation, Sokoto is the only state which would have a different party controlling the executive arm and a different one controlling the legislature. This follows the emergence on Tuesday of the APC’s Aminu Manya Achida as the speaker of the Sokoto state assembly.

Sokoto’s competitive general election: The elections in Sokoto state were the most competitive in the country. Governor Aminu Tambuwal, a member of the PDP, narrowly won reelection with just 341 votes against his former deputy, Aliyu Ahmad, who represented the APC. The state assembly election was also close with the APC narrowly clinching that one with 16 elected lawmakers compared to the PDP’s 14.

How Achida won: As with everything in Sokoto these days, the speakership election on Tuesday was also a close race between two APC lawmakers – Achida, who represents Wurno constituency, and Abdullahi Sidi, who represents Gwadabawa South.

  • In the end Achida (who was nominated by a PDP lawmaker) polled 16 votes while Sidi got 13 votes.

One last thing: As if to reflect the partisan spread in the assembly, a PDP lawmaker, Abubakar Magaji, was elected as deputy speaker.
