In what initially appeared to be an army shakeup, the military has come out to debunk reports that Lt. Gen. Yusuf Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff, has been replaced with Lt. Gen. Lamidi O. Adeosun.
What really happened: Adeosun, the Chief of Training and Operations at the Army Headquarters was promoted this week to the rank of Lieutenant General by President Muhammadu Buhari. His promotion marks the first time in the 4th Republic that a soldier will share the same rank with the Chief of Army Staff.
- Army clarification: A statement by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Sagir Musa, has maintained that Adeosun has only been promoted to the same rank as Buratai, but the Chief of Army Staff has not been replaced.
- Also promoted was Brigadier General AB Biu, General Officer Commanding of 7 Division and Commander Sector 2 Operation LAFIYA DOLE Maiduguri who has now been promoted to the rank of Major General.
- Also, a subaltern in the army, Lieutenant AJ Danjibrin of 211 Demonstration Battalion Bauchi has now been promoted to the rank of Captain.
The big picture: The P.R.O stated that the officers were granted promotion for their efforts in the counter-insurgency operation in the North.
The statement further clarified that Lt. General L. O Adeosun was only given: “special/accelerated promotion from Major General to Lieutenant General by the President and Commander -in – Chief of the Armed Forced of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari for his extraordinary feats, exemplary leadership, loyalty and uncommon commitment in the counter-insurgency operation in the North Eastern part of Nigeria.”
