Constitutional lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), has sounded a note of warning to the Federal Government (FG), that the Shiite leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky must not be allowed to die.
Falana said in a statement that El-Zakzaky has already lost one eye, and is on the verge of losing another. His wife too, reportedly, is unable to walk any longer as injuries from the military attack on their residence in Zaria in December 2015, continues to prevent her.
Between the lines: It will be recalled that after the attempted invasion of the National Assembly complex by men believed to be members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (ISN), the House of Representatives immediately called for the release of El-Zakzaky at plenary the day after the incident.
For additional effect, Falana echoed the House of Representative’s pronouncement in his statement:
- “Therefore, the Federal Government should implement the unanimous resolution of the House of Representatives for the release of Elzakzaky and his wife without any further delay.”
A team of international doctors who examined El-Zakzaky and his wife had also earlier recommended that the duo be released to and flown abroad for adequate treatment but it was all to no avail.
Bottomline: If the FG cannot obey court orders and it also finds it difficult to hearken to elected representatives, it implies that the executive have become a law onto themselves and are unable to be held accountable.
